Anxiety
Anxiety is a feeling of worry, fear, or nervousness that can happen in response to stress or uncertainty. While it is a normal part of life, when anxiety becomes excessive or persistent, it can interfere with daily activities and may be considered an anxiety disorder. The main difference between anxiety and panic attacks is the intensity and suddenness of the symptoms. See Panic Attacks for more information
SYMPTOMS
Constant worry, tension, or dread. Difficulty concentrating. Irritation. Physically, rapid heart rate, sweating, difficulty sleeping, and fatigue.
DURATION
​​May be short-term, linked to scary event, or long-lasting persisting for months or years and may be diagnosed as generalized anxiety disorder.
CAUSES
Causes may include genetics, brain chemistry, stressful life events, medical conditions, past trauma, or substance use.
RISK FACTORS
May include family history of anxiety disorders, significant stress, childhood adversity, or having a chronic illness.
TREATMENT
May involve cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), medication, regular exercise, better sleep habits, and relaxation or mindfulness exercises.
