Panic Attacks
A panic attack is a sudden, intense surge of fear or discomfort that often comes without warning and peaks within minutes. During a panic attack, a person may feel overwhelming physical and emotional sensations, making them believe something is seriously wrong, even when there is no real danger. The main difference between anxiety and panic attacks is the intensity and suddenness of the symptoms.
SYMPTOMS
Can include a racing heart, shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, sweating, and a feeling of losing control or going crazy.
DURATION
Typically lasts between 5 to 20 minutes, though some symptoms can linger for up to an hour
CAUSES
Can be triggered by stress, trauma, certain medical conditions, and substance use, such as caffeine or drugs
RISK FACTORS
May include a lifelong history of violence, substance abuse, mental health conditions, massive life changes, or a family history of panic disorder
TREATMENT
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), medication, breathing and relaxation techniques, exercise and reducing stimulants
